No sympathy for Sheridan

I realise that this is completely last week’s news – there are plenty of important things that have happened since then, and if I was going to write about a court verdict at the moment, I should probably be celebrating the (partial) acquittal of the Thessaloniki 4, and even that was a few days ago now – but nevermind. I’ve had this rant rattling around inside me for a while now, so I just want to get it out. I realise that incarceration is a fucking horrible thing to happen to anyone, even someone who condemns mass militant working-class action and encourages grassing. Even someone who knows full well how useless and shit parliamentary politics are but still gets himself elected as an MP and so carries on propping up the whole sordid illusion out of some patronising vanguardist belief that you can’t be honest about what you really think. Even the kind of twat who goes on Celebrity Big Brother.  Even someone who destroys the organisation he belongs to by launching an incredibly stupid lawsuit based on lies, with no connection to any socialist principles whatsoever, against the advice of his own comrades, and then either drags his friends, comrades and loved ones into perjuring themselves for him, or viciously attacks them when they refuse to get involved in his mess. (I certainly don’t endorse SSY’s politics in general, or even everything they say in that article, but it is a marvellously passionate and unmistakably human piece of writing, which makes it something a lot of political writers – including me, of course – can learn from.) All those things are fucked, but the repressive force of the state is more fucked still, so I could still feel something for the mad bastard, if only he could take responsibility for his actions and actually admit how massively he’s fucked up. But as long as he piously and unrepentantly continues to bleat about how “I will continue to fight a system that protects the real criminals – the rich and powerful” (wonder if that includes his former Celebrity Big Brother housemates?) while his  pathetic personality cult of a party churns out shit about how “this is the culmination of a brutal vendetta carried out by the rich and powerful against Scotland’s most prominent socialist”, he can get to fuck. And fuck all the despicable lefty rags not directly run by Sheridan that still spew shit like “Tommy’s real crime was to be a principled socialist and then to win a libel case against the Murdoch press.” Yes, this is a ruling-class attack that could have happened to any principled socialist, as long as they fucked around behind their partner’s back with a journo from the Murdoch press and then were stupid enough to launch a libel case based on claims that even they admit are lies. Sheridan’s self-destruction has nothing to do with socialism or the class struggle, and trying to tie the two together won’t make him look good, it’ll just add another smear to the already stained reputation of socialism. That once-proud name has already been tarnished by association with murderers and tyrants from Lenin and Stalin down to Mubarak, it really doesn’t need the added indignity of being used as cover for a sleazy politician’s backfiring lawsuits.

About nothingiseverlost

"The impulse to fight against work and management is immediately collective. As we fight against the conditions of our own lives, we see that other people are doing the same. To get anywhere we have to fight side by side. We begin to break down the divisions between us and prejudices, hierarchies, and nationalisms begin to be undermined. As we build trust and solidarity, we grow more daring and combative. More becomes possible. We get more organized, more confident, more disruptive and more powerful."
