My last post was slightly rushed, so I’d just like to expand slightly on some of the things I mentioned in it. First of all, I briefly mentioned a few recent events in the UK, but didn’t get around to discussing their full significance: I think the latest victory that Edinburgh Claimants have won over A4e is especially important because there’s a common myth that the unemployed are powerless and incapable of any action other than petitioning others to act on their behalf, so examples of successful direct action by claimants are valuable as a way of undermining this sense of powerlessness. Similarly, I think the Hackney squatters’ resistance to evictions is particularly important following the depressing events at Dale Farm. This kind of action needs to spread and spread, not just in defence of squats, but also those families threatened with eviction after the riots, and just anyone who’s fallen behind on their rent. This kind of thing makes a huge difference in people’s lives, and it’s an area where we can make an impact relatively easily, so it’d be good to see it happen more often. I also want to repeat the plug for the Guildhall cleaners’ demonstration on Monday, anyone in the London area who’s not at work then should definitely try to get down to support them.
But mostly I just want to post loads of pictures from the Oakland general strike, because things like that don’t happen every day. So here you go:
